Municipal Election 2018

Monday, October 22, 2018 is Election Day for municipalities and School Board Trustees across the Province of Ontario. For the Township of South Stormont the following positions may be available to vote for depending upon the nominations papers that are filed on or before Nomination Day.

  • Mayor (1 position)
  • Deputy Mayor (1 position)
  • Councillor (3 positions)
  • School Board Trustee (English Public and English Catholic)
  • School Board Trustee (French Public and French Catholic)
Am I eligible to vote?
A person is entitled to be an elector at an election held in a local municipality, if on Voting Day, he or she is:
  • a Canadian citizen
  • at least 18 years of age
  • resides within the municipality or an owner or tenant of land there, or the spouse of such owner or tenant and is not otherwise prohibited from voting.
Who can be a Candidate? 
Any eligible elector may be a candidate for the position of Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Councillor. School Board Trustees must be eligible electors of their own school board. 
Nomination Period –  When and where can I file a nomination paper for the position of Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Councillor?
An eligible elector may file a nomination paper with the Clerk during regular office hours when the Clerk’s Office is open from Tuesday, May 1, 2018 until Thursday, July 26, 2018. On Friday, July 27, 2018 which is Nomination Day, a nomination paper may be filed in the Clerk’s Office from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The onus is on the candidate to file a complete nomination paper with the correct fee. An important change for the 2018 Municipal Election is the requirement to have 25 eligible electors from the Township of South Stormont to endorse and sign your nomination paper when you submit to the Clerk.
