Half-Load Season Set to End on May 1st

As spring settles into SDG Counties and the surrounding region, a familiar seasonal marker is also coming to a close: half‑load season will officially end on May 1, 2026, reopening local roads to full weight limits and signalling a shift toward warmer, drier driving conditions.

Instituted every year in late winter and early spring, half‑load restrictions are designed to protect road infrastructure during the annual thaw, when pavement and underlying materials are especially vulnerable. As ice and snow melt, moisture seeps beneath the asphalt, weakening the road’s structure and making it more susceptible to cracking and long‑term damage under heavy loads. By limiting trucks to five tonnes per axle on designated roads, SDG Counties and local municipalities help reduce costly repairs and extend the life of the region’s extensive road network.

Trevor Baker, SDG Counties’ operations manager, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of the seasonal measures.

“These measures are important to the bottom line of SDG Counties, as well as the effective use of taxpayer dollars,” Baker said. “We allow for the transportation of goods across SDG Counties, while at the same time putting measures in place to protect the investment taxpayers have made in our infrastructure.”

With the roads steadily drying and structural integrity returning, crews are now preparing for the transition back to normal operations. County officials also took the opportunity to thank motorists, trucking companies, and local businesses for their patience and cooperation throughout the season.

As half‑load signs come down on May 1, drivers are reminded that the short‑term inconvenience plays a long‑term role in keeping the region’s roads safe, reliable, and resilient for everyone.
