South Stormont Celebrates Community Champions at Volunteer Appreciation Gala
On Friday, April 17th, The Township of South Stormont proudly hosted the South Stormont Volunteer Appreciation Gala, an annual event dedicated to recognizing the outstanding contributions of local volunteers who enrich the community through their service, programs, and events.
Held at the South Stormont Community Hall in Long Sault, this year’s Gala featured a “Nashville Nights” theme and welcomed 110 invited guests representing 16 volunteer organizations. Also in attendance were local dignitaries including members of South Stormont Council, MPP Nolan Quinn, and MP Eric Duncan.
The evening featured a memorable program that celebrated the spirit of volunteerism. Guests enjoyed a catered dinner provided by Prestige Catering, with bar service by the St. Andrews West Knights of Columbus. Entertainment was provided by The County Lads, while Dr. Wayne Domanko delivered an invigorating keynote address highlighting the impact of community volunteerism.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2025 Fran Laflamme Volunteer of the Year Award and the Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, honours that have been awarded annually since 2000 to recognize individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the community.
This year’s Fran Laflamme Volunteer of the Year recipient, Barbara Ann Zummach, was recognized for her years of dedicated service with Meals on Wheels and the Stormont County Fair Board. Her commitment and tireless efforts have made a meaningful difference in the lives of many residents.
The Youth Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Burke Thompson, whose dedication extends well beyond required high school volunteer hours. Burke has made a significant impact through his involvement with numerous local organizations and community events, demonstrating leadership and a strong commitment to service at a young age.
“Volunteers are the heart of South Stormont,” says Mayor Bryan McGillis. “They give their time, energy, and compassion so that our community can thrive, often without expecting anything in return. Whether they are supporting local events, helping neighbours, serving on committees, or quietly stepping in where help is needed, their contributions make a real and lasting difference. On behalf of Council and the entire community, I extend my heartfelt thanks to every volunteer for the dedication and pride they bring to South Stormont.”
The South Stormont Volunteer Appreciation Gala continues to serve as an important opportunity to celebrate and thank the individuals and groups whose generosity and dedication strengthen the fabric of the community.
