South Stormont Fire and Rescue Awarded Provincial Grant to Enhance Firefighter Safety
On Tuesday, January 5th, 2026, representatives from South Stormont Fire and Rescue joined MPP Nolan Quinn and members of the fire service from The City of Cornwall and the Townships of SD&SG for an announcement of funding through the provincial Fire Protection Grant.
South Stormont Fire and Rescue is the recipient of $65,180, which will be used to support cancer prevention efforts for the fire service and equipment to safely respond to lithium-ion battery emergencies.
“This funding is necessary for the protection of our firefighters,” said South Stormont Fire Chief, Morris Lamer. “Evidence shows a direct link to various cancers associated with fire response activities, and the improved decontamination this funding will support will serve our team well to mitigate those concerns.”
The funding received will specifically be used for:
- Shower facilities at Station 3 (Newington)
- 2 new gear extractors (washing machines) at Station 2 (Ingleside)
- Bunker gear storage racks
- Decontamination soap
- Lithium-Ion battery response equipment
“With municipalities navigating financial pressures, it is funding like the Fire Protection Grant that helps us tackle the needs of our fire service,” said Mayor Bryan McGillis. “This funding is critical to the safety of our brave men and women of South Stormont Fire and Rescue, and we thank the province for their support and MPP Quinn for his continued advocacy for our communities.”
In total, over $385,000 has been invested in the City of Cornwall, South Stormont, North Stormont, North Dundas, South Dundas and South Glengarry through the Fire Protection Grant.
The province-wide Fire Protection Grant total rose from $10M in 2025 to $20M in 2026, providing more firefighters across the province with the tools they need to stay safe and effectively respond to life threatening emergencies.
