South Stormont Makes Land Donation to Habitat for Humanity

On Wednesday, January 21, Council approved the donation of surplus lands in Long Sault, as well as the waiver of associated development fees, to Habitat for Humanity. This donation will support the development of two semi-detached homes in the village that will house four Habitat for Humanity partner families.

“This will be the third Habitat for Humanity development in South Stormont, and we are thrilled to partner with them once again to provide a hand up to deserving families in our community,” said Mayor Bryan McGillis.

After reviewing a number of parcels suitable for donation, it was determined that a location on Bethune Avenue in Long Sault, currently zoned as Open Space, would be an ideal parcel. Two parcels of land can be created that will each accommodate a semi-detached home, increasing the number of partner families supported. The location also has municipal service connections available and are near established commercial areas of the village, local parks and recreation facilities, and places of worship.

“We are incredibly thankful for the continued support of South Stormont Council and staff,” said Leigh Taggart, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties. “At a time when affordability pressures are impacting families across Ontario, building affordable homes, where mortgages are never more than 30 per cent of household income, helps families better manage everyday expenses like groceries and utilities. This generous contribution will help support four local families for years to come and create lasting stability in our community.”

A Zoning By-law Amendment will take place through a housekeeping exercise this spring to change the current zoning of the donated lands from Open Space to Residential Second Service to accommodate the development. All required planning and building approvals will be undertaken to ensure compliance throughout the build process. As Habitat for Humanity is currently completing another partner home in SDG, it is expected that this development will take place in 2027.

Habitat for Humanity assists families in purchasing safe, affordable homes at fair market value through interest-free, income-based mortgages that do not exceed 30% of annual income. Mortgage payments are allocated to a fund dedicated to constructing additional local homes for other families. Supporting one home build directly contributes to the sustainability of future construction projects.
