Township of South Stormont Acquires Key Waterfront Lands to Support Community Vision
The Township of South Stormont is proud to announce the transfer of five waterfront land parcels from the St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC), a significant milestone that will help shape the future of the Township's waterfront and create new opportunities for residents and visitors. The transferred properties include lands in Ingleside at the base of Dickinson Drive, Hoople Creek, two parcels at the Long Sault Parkway and Highway 2 intersection, and Lakeview Park. These sites were identified as key locations within the Township's Waterfront Development Plan.
The transfer is the culmination of years of collaboration between the Township, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, the Province of Ontario, and numerous community partners.
"This is a truly historic day for South Stormont," said Mayor Bryan McGillis. "Over many years, multiple Councils, staff members, and community partners have worked toward this goal. To see these lands transferred into local ownership is incredibly rewarding and something our community can be proud of. It creates opportunities for future generations to better connect with and enjoy our waterfront, while building on one of South Stormont's greatest assets."
The Township's Waterfront Development Plan, adopted by Council in 2021 following extensive public consultation, outlines a long-term vision for enhancing waterfront access, recreation, tourism, and economic development. While the land transfer represents an important step forward, the vision will be implemented over time through future planning, investment, and partnership opportunities.
“Supporting our communities is essential, and SLPC is leading by example,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “From the recent restoration of the historic Battle of Crysler Farm site in South Dundas, to initiating the transfer of land that will advance South Stormont’s waterfront plan, which includes trails, public spaces, and new recreational amenities, these initiatives demonstrate a strong commitment to local growth and heritage.”
“This land transfer marks a major step forward for Eastern Ontario,” said Minister Quinn, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “By working together, SLPC and South Stormont are creating waterfront spaces that will be better equipped to serve residents and visitors for generations to come. This partnership shows how collaboration can deliver meaningful outcomes, enhancing public access, attract tourism, and strengthening our local economy.”
The Township extends its appreciation to the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, and all those who contributed to making this long-awaited achievement possible.
