Candidate Information

Running for municipal office is an opportunity to help shape the future of your community. Municipal elections in Ontario take place every four years and determine who will serve as municipal councillors and school board trustees. This page outlines the key steps, requirements, and responsibilities involved in becoming a candidate.

Who Can Run For Office?

To run for a position on council, you must:

  • Be eligible to vote in that municipality.
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be aged 18 or older, on the day you file your nomination
  • Not be otherwise disqualified under the Municipal Elections Act

You must meet all eligibility requirements on the day you file your nomination. For example, a person who is 17 years old but will turn 18 before nomination day must wait until they have turned 18 to file their nomination.

  • Be a resident within the jurisdiction of the board
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be 18 or older
  • Meet any other qualifications to vote for the school board (for example, being a Roman Catholic, or holding French language rights).
