Administrative Assistant - Fire and By-law Departments

The Township of South Stormont is seeking to hire an experienced Administrative Assistant to support the Fire and By-law Department. The position reports to the Township’s Fire Chief, while providing backup support to Customer Service.

The Administrative Assistant provides clerical and administrative support including research, document preparation and handling of confidential files, records management, prepare meeting minutes, scheduling of meetings and assistance in budget preparation. Backup support is provided to Corporate Services Department’s Customer Service Representative and occasional Parks & Recreation Dept. for some facility rentals.

Lifeguards/Instructors - Parks and Recreation Department

Wage Rate: currently under review
Hours per week: 35 +/- hours / week
Duration: up to 13 weeks – May 31, 2021 to August 29, 2021

The Lifeguards / Instructors will provide full support and activities for groups of all ages for a complete outdoor summer swim program for the Township of South Stormont.  They will also enhance skills and gain valuable work experience through daily contact with the public. Proper teaching and guarding certifications are required.

The Lifeguard Supervisor and the Director of Parks and Recreation will provide the necessary day-to-day supervision. Students will be provided the necessary training to meet the Township’s Health and Safety Program standards.


 

Historic Site Coordinators - Lost Villages Museum (3) - Parks and Recreation

Wage Range:  currently under review
Hours per week:  40+/- hours per week
Duration:  up to 18 weeks – May 3, 2021 to September 6, 2021

The Historic Site Coordinator(s) will open and close the museum on a daily basis, from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., clean buildings and displays, help with mounting displays, and guide tourists and patrons around the site.   As well, they will operate the store, keep accurate records of sales, and have the register signed by visitors.  These individuals will enhance their skills and gain valuable work experience through daily contact with the public.  Leadership, good communication and organizational skills are a must.

Members of the Lost Villages Historical Society will provide the necessary day-to-day supervision. Students will be provided the necessary training to meet the Township’s Health and Safety Program standards.


Planning/Building Student (1) - Planning and Building Department

Wage Rate: currently under review
Hours per Week:35 hours per week
Duration: up to 18 weeks – May 3, 2021 to September 3, 2021

The Planning/Building Intern will provide a wide range of land use and planning activities in our community and will be an integral part of the Planning Department. Duties will include updating the Township’s planning documents, providing assistance to public inquiries and planning application reviews along with completing public notices and circulations with respect to planning applications and undertaking research initiatives. The successful candidate will ideally be enrolled in or have completed a university program related to urban planning or geography. The candidate will also be assisting in scanning and integrating building permit files with the Township’s new electronic permitting system.

The Director of Planning/Building will provide the necessary day-to-day supervision. The Intern will be provided the necessary training to meet the Township’s Health and Safety Program standards.


Minor Sport Referees

Wage Rate: Currently under review
Hours per week: 5 +/- hours per week
Soccer Referee Duration: up to 11 weeks – May 11 to July 20
Ball Hockey Referee Duration: up to 9 weeks – May 26 to July 22

Referees will provide strong verbal communication, decision-making and leadership skills. They should be able to easily resolve conflicts and have the physical ability to be on their feet for long periods of time. Applicants can apply for one or both referee positions (soccer and/or ball hockey). Applicants must be at least 14 years of age by May 12, 2021 to be considered for these positions.

The Parks and Recreation Coordinator will provide schedules and instructions for each week. The student will be provided the necessary training to meet the Township’s Health and Safety Program standards.


South Stormont Fire and Rescue

Being a firefighter requires significant commitment from candidates and their families. In addition to undergoing a fire fighter recruitment training course, each member is expected to attend 4 to 8 hours of training each month once on the job. As well, there are numerous specialty courses held at various times during the year. Firefighters also participate in fire prevention, public education and volunteer fund raising activities.

A firefighter’s primary goal is to protect lives and to save property. This requires response to calls for emergency assistance, which may include fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, shore base water rescue, and hazardous material incidents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
