The Township of South Stormont proudly hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Gala on Friday, May 2, at the South Stormont Community Hall. With a glamorous “A Night at the Movies” theme, the event welcomed 120 invited guests representing 16 community organizations, all of whom dedicate their time and energy to enhancing the lives of residents throughout the township.

The evening began with Mayor Bryan McGillis leading the national anthem and delivering an uplifting welcome address. “Tonight, we come together not only to celebrate but to recognize the heart and soul of our township—our volunteers,” said Mayor McGillis. “Your commitment, compassion, and tireless service are what make South Stormont such a special place to call home. Whether you're organizing community events, supporting youth programs, or lending a hand to those in need, you are the true stars of this evening, and we are deeply grateful.”

Guests enjoyed an evening of fine dining, live music, and an inspiring keynote speech by Tish Humphries, President of the Beyond 21 Foundation. Humphries shared the impactful work being done by her organization, which supports adults with developmental disabilities across the region.

A highlight of the night was the presentation of the 2024 Youth Volunteer of the Year Award to Isabelle Paquette, a dedicated Tagwi Secondary School student who has contributed over 400 volunteer hours to organizations such as the Optimist Club, Children’s Treatment Centre, and the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets.

The celebration concluded with the announcement of David Smith as the recipient of the 2024 Fran Laflamme Volunteer of the Year Award. Although Mr. Smith was unable to attend in person, he shared a heartfelt message via video, while his daughter, Sara Andrews, accepted the award on his behalf. A well-known figure in South Stormont, Smith has been an active community builder for over four decades. In addition to running his own small businesses, Smith has been the driving force behind countless volunteer initiatives and not-for-profit groups. From organizing local sports, operating community events, or fundraising for community projects, he has been a constant contributor to the betterment of the Township of South Stormont

The Township of South Stormont extends its sincere thanks to all community volunteers for their ongoing dedication and service.
